![]() ![]() To call such images clichéd would be to call youth clichéd, to call Manhattan itself a cliché. With Katey, we travel by cab and watch Broadway “slipping by the windows like a string of lights being pulled off a Christmas tree,” or see limousines idling in front of the 21 Club, smoke spiraling from their tailpipes “like genies from a bottle.” These pages prompt recollections of movie scenes stamped so deeply on the psyche that they feel remembered: elevated trains, Carole Lombard and Jimmy Stewart, smoky jazz clubs and men in fedoras. With this snappy period piece, Towles resurrects the cinematic black-and-white Manhattan of the golden age of screwball comedy, gal-pal camaraderie and romantic mischief (think of “Stage Door,” “Made for Each Other,” “My Man Godfrey” and even Fay Wray in “King Kong”). ![]()

Check out this in-depth review of the Chinese edition of Little Bearby Betty Choi of CHALK Academy. Similar to Frog and Toad, this series is highly recommended by parents and educators alike. In all of the books, the simple highly repetitive dialogue as well as the adorable hatched illustrations serve as great aids to young Mandarin learners. The fifth book, 《亲爱的小熊──给小熊的吻》 A Kiss for Little Bear, only contains one 27-page story, but, each page contains a large illustration and only 1-4 lines of text. Each story is about 13 pages and can be enjoyed independently of the others. The first four books in this set each contain four short stories. Similar to the English version which is advertised as an "I can read" book, this Chinese version is similarly simple and suited for young Mandarin learners. They simply introduce these concepts in an entertaining and easy-to-understand way. Children’s books give kids the chance to talk about math concepts without solving a problem or coming up with an answer. We’re not talking workbooks or drills, either. That’s why I love combining the two: reading children’s books about math. ![]() And while we hear about the benefits of daily reading to our kids, we don’t always know clear and easy ways to talk about math.
